Tonya and John Brandon met during their days at Hogwarts as they were both Gryffindor students. As they were also in the same year, they essentially grew up together and became 'official' best friends in their third year. It wasn't until their seventh year that either expressed their true feelings for the other and, although they were very young, they married shortly after graduating from Hogwarts. As a young and poor couple, Tonya and John lived with John's parents for roughly two years before Tonya became pregnant with their first child at age nineteen. John's parents did not kick them out for getting pregnant - in fact, they urged them to stay so they could save money and have help raising their child. However, Tonya and John felt that it was time for them to move out to their own place at that point, and so that is exactly what they did. The flat of their choosing was sparse in furniture and decoration, but they brought their little boy, Callum, into a world full of love.

After a short two years of having Callum in their lives, the couple gave birth to another child - this time, a girl. Laila Imogen Brandon, named after Tonya and John's mother's respectively, was born with bright blue eyes and a head full of hair, weighing a whopping 8 lbs. Callum became very protective of his little sister when she was just two weeks old and that seemed to travel with them throughout their childhood. Although Rhys joined them just a year after Laila's birth, Callum remained protective over Laila more than their brother. This only lasted until Callum was six and Laila was four, when Callum focused more of his time on Rhys and included his little brother into more of their activities. Laila didn't mind and hardly noticed that Callum began to exclude her a bit around that time, mainly because her mother and herself spent so much time together. Her mother was obviously intent on giving her baby girl all the things she desired, and wished herself for them to do girly things together. At the young age of four, Laila and her mother had experienced five pedicures together, multiple shopping days, and various cookie-baking sessions. To say that Laila was a mommy's girl was an understatement.

Tonya and John never had a ton of money to spend on extra things for their kids, but the Brandon children hardly went without things they needed, and wanted for that matter. Their grandparents were always there to help as they had offered when Tonya realized she was expecting her first child, and they stuck with them through the tough times. There were many times that Tonya and John took their children to John's parents house for dinner when they couldn't afford it, or when it was only John's parents who gave the kids Christmas gifts simply because the couple couldn't afford them. And although their tight-knit Pureblood family struggled a bit for a span of seven or eight years, everything worked out in the end when John finally gained his position as a Head of a Department within the Ministry, allowing Tonya to leave her job to stay at home with the children.

The happiness that fell upon the Brandon family after John earned a good position in the Ministry was great - however, the fact that Tonya quit her own job dawned on her as Callum went off to Hogwarts. There was only a mere two years before Laila, too, would get on the Hogwarts Express, then Rhys the year after. Tonya felt sad that she had essentially missed being with her kids while they grew up and, ultimately, she became depressed. Laila barely noticed as, at that age, she was too young to really understand emotions on a deeper level. She went off to Hogwarts and was sorted into Gryffindor, as were her parents and as was Callum. She found a home there that she would never have thought possible to find. Laila became one of the girls that you simply knew as a ball of sunshine. She was practically always happy, eager to help her friends, and intelligent in most of her courses. In short, she became fairly well-known fairly quickly, at least in the Gryffindor house.

Devastation crashed in on the Brandon family during Halloween of Laila's second year at Hogwarts and Rhys' first: Tonya committed suicide. Callum, Laila, and Rhys were immediately sent home and allowed a week of grieving, but returning to Hogwarts felt like the last thing any of them wanted. Laila became sad and she felt alone, like her mother didn't think she was enough to make her happy. As time progressed, the Brandon children became adjusted to the fact that their mother was dead and that their father was trying his best to take over the roles she had previously played in their lives. Sometime in Laila's fourth year at Hogwarts, it seemed that her family was finally coping with the death of their mother/wife, and that they all came to an understanding that they would be there to talk about it if someone needed to, but they were, essentially, going to try and live their lives the happiest they could, without taking things for granted. In retrospect, this shaped Laila to the woman she is today.
[break] [break]
While Laila was always a happy child, the death of her mother made her see that life is short and you should enjoy it while you had the chance. Laila attempts to follow the life lessons she's learned since her mother's suicide by holding tight to the friends she's made over the years, attending parties, and simply living life as though there's no tomorrow - for, of course, there may not be.
