shortly after the battle of hogwarts, gregory goyle was arrested on charges with involvement with death eaters. due to draco malfoy's pull with the system at that time, he was released roughly two years after his arrest with the condition that he not be caught up in any further dark activity. of course, gregory goyle figured the ministry of magic wasn't keeping tabs on him because he was dim-witted and so began his 'new life' on good terms, though it wouldn't stay that way. during his better years after azkaban, gregory met tracey davis, a pureblood witch who knew him during his time at hogwarts but whom he convinced that he was a different person. he was a better person so he said.
[break][break]
greg and tracey had four children together not far from each other. first was river, then came his twin sister and brother aubree and ezra. following river's twin siblings was varick, and it was after his birth that things began to go south for the goyle family. river was only four at the time when his mother and father began to seriously argue with each other. they didn't get along and river couldn't understand why but he didn't like it at all. he tried to ignore them by keeping to himself and he became a very quiet child. he also learned how to get what he wanted and became very manipulative during that period, as well. at the age of six, his parents got a divorce and river and his siblings moved with their mother to their grandparents home to live, leaving their father behind.
[break][break]
river's father didn't stay in his life after that point in time. gregory goyle gave tracey child support money but never came by to see the kids. he would stop in every christmas and birthday, load the children with cash, and then head off to who-knows-where. river learned not to trust his father from a young age and when he turned eleven and got his hogwarts letter, river told his father not to give him any more money. greg wasn't like other parents that could see the damage they were doing the children and took river's advice seriously - he never came back to give river any money again, nor for the other children. he continued to send tracey money for them, but he never showed his face in their house again.
[break][break]
river went off to hogwarts and was sorted into slytherin for fairly obvious reasons, he thought. he knew he could get what he wanted and he could be sly, as well, so river figured he'd be put there. at that point river didn't realize how smart he was but he began to see it as all of his work came easy to him and he climbed the ranks of his peers. river didn't think much of his intelligence at first because he thought everyone thought their work was easy but in his third year his potions teacher named him the most intelligent student of their class and he realized that he was, in fact, one of the most intelligent kids around them. he didn't boast, though. river was a pretty commendable guy if you took away the fact that he was a slytherin and was judged for it constantly.
[break][break]
he began to dislike people who judged others so easily. river knew his father's reputation in school but honestly he was nothing like that bastard. river hated how he was constantly judged for being in a certain house when the only real reason he was there was because he could get what he wanted. he never bullied anyone, didn't worship basilisks, or any other ridiculous theories people seemed to have about people who were sorted into slytherin. river became a bit resentful and over time it became hard for him to make friends because he wondered if they were judging him.
[break][break]
after graduating from hogwarts, river immediately knew what he wanted to do: be an obliviator at the ministry. being able to wipe other's memories was something he thought important, even if he couldn't wipe his own.
