"mum, why is telly so small?" [break]
"i've already told you many times terence, he is a dwarf." [break]
"aren't dwarfs supposed to be strong?" [break]
"terence, your brother is strong, now stop questioning his existence and eat your food." [break]
takes a bite of his food, "but mum, why can't telly eat any food? is it because he is a dwarf?" [break]
"he is only a mere eight months old terence, and now eat your food and no more fussing about him being a dwarf, alright?" [break]
the boy nodded and started to eat his food, "one more question mum." [break]
the mother looked up, her eyes annoyed but still filled with compassion for her son. "go on," [break]
"because telly is a dwarf, does that mean i have to be nice to him?" [break]
"terence, you are his sibling. you will treat him like any other brother. you will protect him, you will care for him, and you will never abandon him, no matter what circumstance. am i understoood?" [break]
"aye mother, so that - " [break]
"eat your food, and after that i'll let you read papa's letter." [break]
the young boy did not make another peep and ate his dinner in silence. often he would glance at the young boy in the high chair, a toothless grin planted on his face as he smashed his food everywhere. [break]
--------------------------------------------------------[break][break]
after dinner, the boy raced to put his plates in the sink and his mother handed him the letter. "i'll be back in a minute, watch telly for me." the mother disappeared down the hallway and up the stairs as the young boy took a seat beside his brother. [break]
"you know, i'm not going to be your babysitter forever. and just because you're small doesn't mean you'll get all the attention in this family."
the baby looked at his brother and back down at his food, smiling again as it mashed the potatos into oblivion. [break]
"right, you can't understand what i'm sayin'. well you better listen to this because it's from our papa, now stop playing with your food and listen." [break]
the baby didn't listen and continued to smash the potatoes and the mashed carrots. [break]
the young boy sighed loudly, but focused his attention on the letter. his fingers trembling as this was the first letter in three months since his father said that he might not be coming back. he lifted the seal and unfolded the letter in his lap, gazing at the poor handwriting. "dear my love, i know how hard this must be for you and i wish i could be there, but the jury has found me guilty. i will not be coming home for a long time, and i know how much of a disservice this is for all of you. especially you. please do not tell the children of where i am. i do not want them to think of me as a criminal, or a monster. you have been, and always will be the best thing that has happened to me. I will always try to send you letters when i can. i know terence is becoming a fine boy, and i'm sure he will be the best brother for telemachus. remind him of his duties, to be strong, and to never discriminate anyone for who they are. i loathe to hold you, terence, and telemeachus in my arms. i love you." [break]
the young boy couldn't believe his eyes. his father would never come back. the young boy felt tears streaking down his cheek even though he tried to fight them. he looked to his brother who was now concentrated on him, and only him. the young boy sniffed and put the letter on the table. he put his hand down on his brother's plate. "why'd you stop? i thought playing with food was fun," he sniffed again as he smashed his hand down at the mashed potatoes. the baby smiled and mimicked his hand on the potatoes. the baby soon started to laugh, and the young boy did the same. [break]
------------------------------------------------------------[break][break]
"c'mon telly, let's go to the park!" [break]
the toddler rushed to meet him at the door. "park, i want to slide on the slide." [break]
"we do that all the time! can't we at least try the swings now?" [break]
the toddler shook his head as the young boy started to tie the toddler's shoes. "no, slide." [break]
The young boy looked up and smiled, "fine, but next time we're going on the swings." [break]
the toddler shook his head, "no, slide." [break]
"i said next time telly, you know what next time means right?" [break]
the toddler didn't answer and waited at the door, a large smile on his face. "i want to go on the slide!" [break]
the young boy opened the door and held the toddler's hand. "mum, we're leaving now!" [break]
"take care of your brother, terence!" [break]
"aye mother! bye!" [break]
the two boys ventured to the park across the street where they found more than normal children playing today. the toddler pulled on his brother's arm and pointed at the slide. "i want to go on the slide!" [break]
"aye aye, you have to wait your turn telly!" he said as he picked the toddler up and put him in line for the slide. the young boy stood right behind him, and noticed everyone staring at him. he could hear people whispering behind him and see people glancing back at telly.
"eh, this isn't some playground for lil' goblins," a boy said from behind the young boy. [break]
the young boy looked back at him, still holding onto telly, "aye, than you best be leaving." [break]
soon all the kids started to stare at the two of them, some watching as they sat on the slide. "he doesn't mean him silly. he means that thing you're holding," another boy said from in front of him.[break]
the young boy turned to look at the other kid, "aye, lil' telly is just like you an' me. got a problem with him?" [break]
The playground was silent. nobody answered the question. the young boy glanced back at the people behind him and at the people in front. it was dead silent. the young boy soon picked up the toddler in his arms and pushed by everyone until he was out of the line. [break]
"slide! i want to go on the slide!" [break]
"i'm sorry telly, i'm afraid we can't go today. we'll try tomorrow a'ight?" [break]
"slide! I want to go on the slide!" the toddler started to wiggle but the young boy kept him steady in his arms. [break]
"not today..." he whispered as he opened the door. "not today..."[break]
