There's an expression, something conceptual that those looking to escape troubled pasts covet: A clean slate. The thing is, when you're born into such a situation, only able to piece together who you are from the stories of others and old photos that can move but not talk, like fitting thousands of puzzle pieces together without a reference picture, it makes you sometimes crave for even the most inescapable of pasts. Teddy Lupin was orphaned before he could even form memories, his parents, Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks, dying in the Battle of Hogwarts during the Second Wizarding War. Gone too before he ever even meet him was his namesake and grandfather Edward "Ted" Tonks. His early years were spent in the charge of his grief-stricken grandmother, a woman the photos told him was once bold and fiercely vivacious, but now carried herself like a wounded animal waiting for infection to finally take her to the other side. Granny Andromeda, for her part, was a loving woman, however, her family losses had served as the proverbial straw to break her camel back and she became so strictly protective of Teddy he found himself having to fight off feelings of resentment in later childhood.[break][break]
It wasn't as though he was completely lacking for surrogate family; his godfather, Harry Potter, was always diligent and caring if nothing else. But as Harry and the Weasleys grew older and came to have families of their own, Teddy found himself feeling like the fifth wheel - the add-in cousin that everyone handled with kid gloves more than the infants because his parents were dead.[break][break]
As it was always known it would for one who carried even some small portion of the blood of Black, an owl arrived in Teddy's 11th year bearing a letter proclaiming his invitation to the school of his parents, their parents before him, and his godfather - Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. There was a certain sense of foreboding about the place - and in particular the Astronomy Tower - as it was the site of his parents' deaths. And still, somehow, sitting in the same common room his father had, running through the same halls his mother had so many years ago, he felt closer to them than ever before. Sorted into Gryffindor house, Teddy was not very quick to make fast friends, feeling known for all the wrong reasons and developing a bit of a reputation for being a loner. His second year was much of the same, buried away in books, conversing by and large out of function more than anything else. It also came with a certain surprise which made him feel all the more the loner: It turned out his fondness for bloody red meat and barefoot walks at night weren't just weird quirks but also indicators of a genetic trait passed to him by his father. While he was only half-werewolf, he still shifted - whether he wanted to or not - when the moon reached its full phase. Teddy discovered this is rather awkward fashion, waking up naked next to a the mangled remnants of half a deer outside of Hagrid's hut and further finding that he'd gone on a rampage within Gryffindor Tower, fortunately not injuring or turning anyone, but making an awful mess of the place before finally exiting and roaming through the castle trying to find a way outside. Fortunately, with the aid of a regimented diet of wolfsbane potion seen to supply by then-Herbology professor Neville Longbottom, Teddy was able to avoid any more unfortunate, vicious shifting-romps, instead permitted to roam the grounds, provided he stayed clear of the Forbidden Forest and kept a reasonable distance from the castle.[break][break]
That summer it was decided that elderly Granny Andromeda was in no shape to ensure that young Teddy didn't go on monthly wolfing adventures throughout Little Hangeton, and so he was packed off to live with the only other member in his surrogate family with lupine tendencies - also his father's former mentee - Bill Weasley, his wife Fleur, and their three children at Shell Cottage. Because of his lupine traits, Uncle Bill was perceived as much wolf as human when Teddy was shifted and is thus the only non-animagus human Teddy has been able to be around while shifted that he didn't feel compelled to attack. It was small, just a seed of acceptance, but it was something that was able to be nurtured and grew. When fall brought with it time to return to Hogwarts this time Teddy didn't board the train alone, instead with his adoptive cousin, Bill and Fleur's eldest daughter Victoire. The girl was very much her mother's daughter, graceful and sociable with ease... also incredibly stubborn. Whether he liked it or not, Teddy was forced to be sociable, to make friends, and to "not be so much of a lone wolf." And while he was loathe to admit it, he was grateful for it - to be included and feel more normal.[break][break]
In his fifth year, Teddy - after no small amount of persistent bothering - convinced Headmistress McGonagall to bend a traditional rule and privately tutor Victoire to become an animagus, in large part because while there were a select few other werewolves attending Hogwarts those few that were Ravenclaws had graduated leaving only the Slytherins with whom he did not get along. In the end, he'd suggested that perhaps if the Headmistress preferred to be his monthly midnight roaming companion, he'd relent on his request she train Victoire until Victoire was of regulated age. Victoire was his best friend and Teddy struggled with the sentiment that he felt protective of her like a sister, and that perhaps it was most appropriate he view her like a sister, but still... he battled the feelings he had craving something more.[break][break]
It took him until the second summer after his graduation, the summer prior to the first year in five that he and Victoire would spend apart, to make his feelings known... and by "make his feelings known," we mean that Victoire made the first move and he much-relieved reciprocated. Still feeling awkward about springing the whole "Hey, I'm snogging your daughter now" thing on his adoptive parents, amplified even more so by the fact that as he was about to follow his mother's footsteps and enter Auror training Fleur would now be his superior, they kept their relationship secret - writing weekly, exchanging furtive glances, and sneaking off when they could on holiday for private moments to be together. Their efforts at confidentiality evidently needed more work, as the next summer, following an abrupt-if-innocent question around the dinner table by little Louis, Fleur informed them that she and Bill had known about the pair of them for quite some time and weren't going to stand in their way. As Teddy, now a full-fledged auror, saw Victoire off at Platform 9 3/4 for her final year at Hogwarts, they shared their first public kiss - witnessed by their younger cousin James Potter. There was no hiding the relationship from the rest of the family anymore.[break][break]
Teddy spent the next six years in Auror service, learning as much as he could and proudly serving alongside his godfather, adoptive mother, and uncle. With the recent disappearance of Andrew Ollivander's son and whispers of dark visions about the Ministry of Magic, Teddy has left his auror post and been placed, upon special request of the Undersecretary to the Minister of Magic and with the agreement of Headmistress McGonagall, as the new Professor of Transfiguration at Hogwarts - for the purposes of added protection to the students and further monitoring in conjunction with Professor Grimp. This has placed a number of new hurdles in Teddy's life - first being that while he was an "O-level" transfiguration student, he's not the foggiest idea how to effectively teach. Foremost though is that being away from their own home, on the hillside near Shell Cottage, for 9 months (save holiday) is putting a strain on his relationship with Victoire - already strained because, ever the heel-dragger, Teddy has continually put off marriage. Even though he's offered to lease a cottage in Hogsmeade, he realizes that it's horribly inconsiderate to ask her to uproot her own career - particularly when the requirements of professorship would have him at the Castle for meals as well as most overnights, as he's also assumed the position of Gryffindor Head of House, at least pro-tem until a more long-term candidate comes along.
