Mat had a number of sides to his personality. The first was his nerdiness. That was seen through his love for Potions and Arithmancy. The second was his charm. That was seen through his dancing and the way he was respectful to women. The third was his ability to exact fair authority as the Sixth Year Male Prefect for Ravenclaw. He did not abuse his power, but he did not let people walk over him either. He did his Year and House proud, proudly representing both in the position.
Tonight seemed like any ordinary night on patrol. He made his way about the floors looking for any suspicious activity. When it came time for the library to close, he stepped down to the Fourth Floor and made sure everyone was leaving and heading back to their Common Rooms without taking any odd detours. It was a pretty standard process really. Most followed the rules, especially these days with what had happened recently to Liam Ollivander and the Ministry urging everyone at the school to take precaution by being on their best behavior. But now and then someone would test the rules and Mat would have to get firm.
That now and then ended up including that evening. Mat caught a Gryffindor heading downstairs as opposed to heading to his tower.
"Pardon," he said to the student, who appeared to be a Third Year. "But you know you are to go directly to your Common Room." The Gryffindor tried to make the excuse that he had to return something to a Hufflepuff friend. "You may return it tomorrow morning, or I can be of assistance and take it to him." The Third Year, who actually had nothing to take to anyone, blushed red and quickly scrambled upstairs. Mat just sighed and shook his head.

Evelyn was walking around the halls, she had caught a couple of students snogging behind one of the statues and had told them it was time to go back to their common room, sending them on their way. She chuckled as she headed down the next corridor after making sure they had been heading towards their common rooms. She spotted Mat the other 6th year prefect from Ravenclaw talking to a Gryffindor and moved closer, leaning against the wall to listen to the exchange.
The Gryffindor was trying to get away with something and making up excuses to do it but Mat wasn't having it and soon the third year was heading back towards the Gryffindor dorm. After the Gryff walked away she walked over to him. "Nicely handled." she said with a smile.

Mat didn't like it when students lied to him. It made him feel like they thought he was unintelligent or easily manipulated. And that was not a very good feeling for anyone who Ravenclaw, a House that thrived on the fact that it contained some of the most intelligent students in the the entire school. He signed when he discovered via the blush that the Gryffindor boy actually didn't have a book and was merely trying to trick him into letting him go hang out with his friends longer. Even when a lovely female student and the other Sixth Year Prefect Evelyn Wood complimented him on how he handled the situation, he was still a bit distraught. "Merci, Evelyn," he said in his strong French accent. "But I should not have had to handle it in such a way. The Third Year should have listened and not have resorted to telling a lie. He will see his friends tomorrow after all." He looked over at Evelyn and tried to smile, but it wasn't a very big one. "Sometimes I fear our authority as Prefects is undermined. Perhaps it is because we are still students as well, and many of the others do not take us very seriously."
Mat tried to perk up just a bit. He usually wasn't a dismal person who went on about it when something was bothering him. He was also one who always played the role of a gentleman around the ladies, and decided he would not make Evelyn feel equally as bummed out by hearing his problems. "Telle est la vie- such is life," he said with a light chuckle. "Anything interesting happen on your part of the patrol so far? It seems that so far this year, there have not been that many problems. Most seem to make their curfew."EVELYN AILSA WOOD
