His great uncle was Caractacus Burke, co-founder of the famous, but fearsome shop Borgin and Burkes in Knockturn Alley. Dathan's father and mother, Billius and Nyna Burke, gained their wealth via inheritance because of their connection to Caractacus. Billius spent his days using his ability to communicate with canines to breed and train wild dogs such as wolves as attack animals for questionable customers. It was later discovered that many of his clients were followers of Voldemort.
The first ten years of Dathan's life were sheltered. He stayed inside and read most of the time, was home-schooled, and his only "friends" were the wolves his father gave to him. This placed in him a general disdain of being around people, which remained in him when he attended Hogwarts, which he of course began doing in his eleventh year, and in adulthood. It also led him to hate being out in sunlight. He would wear sunglasses when out in the daylight in adulthood.
At Hogwarts, Dathan was sorted into Slytherin, but while he shared the traits of many Slytherins, he made friends with few of them, and refused the silly notion of seeing his House as his "family." He kept to himself most of the time, enjoying the study of magical antiquities and artifacts, particularly those that were cursed. While the school library only provided so much information on these, Dathan found ways of obtaining books from the restricted section. He decided that his goal someday would be to acquire such objects to keep as his own. Also, with his inherited animal affinity and animal communication, he also ventured out into the forest a lot. It was there he found the abandoned wolf pup which would be his loyal companion Eligos. His rescue and raising of the animal would probably go down as his only true act of kindness.
After graduating from Hogwarts, Dathan's interest in dark objects led him to get a job at Borgin and Burkes. That interest, his vast knowledge of said objects, and skills at salesmanship (despite his disdain for people, he obtained a silver tongue when dealing with customers) eventually made him owner of the famous shop.
